DAY 3 • Porto • Wine caves of Gaia • Home-Hosted Dinner Set off on a walking tour of Porto, beginning at the São Bento train station, renowned for its elegant azulejo tiles; followed by a stroll along Avenida dos Aliados for a view of the 18th-century bell tower and symbol of Porto; and São Francisco Church. Then, we’ ll enjoy a one-hour cruise along the Douro River, taking in scenic views of Porto’ s historic bridges, including the majestic Ponte Dona Maria Pia, designed by Gustav Eiffel. Then, we’ ll have a wine cellar tour and tasting in Gaia. This evening, we’ ll be welcomed into some private homes to savor a traditional Portuguese meal during a Home- Hosted Dinner. DAY 4 • Porto • Aveiro • Ovo moles workshop • Overland to Nazaré Along the way to Nazaré, we’ ll stop to visit Aveiro, an enchanting maritime town laced with canals, cobblestoned streets, and elegant Art Nouveau architecture. Our tour begins at a workshop for Aveiro’ s signature sweet, ovos moles, where we’ ll have a hands-on lesson on creating these pastries. Then, we’ ll hop aboard a moliceiro— a traditional local boat— for a canal cruise. Upon arrival in Nazaré, we’ ll begin our discoveries at the hilltop neighborhood of Sitio. After exploring, we’ ll take a funicular down to explore the beachfront promenade and Nazaré’ s historic center. Meals: B, L | Hotel in Porto
DAY 5 • Nazaré • Mira de Aire Caves • Fatima Sanctuary This morning we’ ll visit Nazaré’ s Fisherman’ s District( Bairro do Pescadores), where we’ ll meet some of the locals and have some free time. Then, we’ ll visit Mira De Aire Caves for a guided tour. The largest cave network in the country, we’ ll descend underground about 350 feet into a surreal world of dripping stalagmites and stalactites. We’ ll also visit the Fátima Sanctuary, a religious complex built on the location where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to three young peasant girls in 1917. Meals: B, D | Hotel in Porto
DAY 6 • Overland to Faro We’ ll depart Nazaré this morning and continue down the coast to Faro, charming capital of Portugal’ s Algarve region. Upon arrival, we’ ll stop at one of Faro’ s popular rodízio restaurants. Then, enjoy a walking tour of Cidade Velha( Old Town), a labyrinth of cobbled streets in the heart of the city enclosed by ancient Moorish walls. Highlights include Arco de Vila, a Baroque gateway built over the original Arab structure; the Gothic Sé Cathedral; and Carmo Church with its fascinating Capelo Dos Osso, a chapel decorated with the bones of 1,200 monks. DAY 7 • Faro • Olhão • Culatra Island • Lunch with fishermen • Controversial Topic: Eliminating local housing Enjoy a walking tour in the fishing port of Olhão, including the iconic red-brick buildings at Olhão’ s waterfront. We’ ll also meet a local fisherman for a behind-the-scenes look at the modern fishing industry. Then, we’ ll take a ferry to Culatra Island, and learn how to prepare a seafood stew called caldeirada from some of the local fishermen, who will join us for lunch. We’ ll also learn about a Controversial Topic from a local resident, who will tell us about the city’ s projected plans to demolish local housing in order to build hotels. Meals: B, L | Hotel in Faro
DAY 8 • Overland to Cascais • Sintra • Play padel On our way to Cascais, we’ ll stop in the picturesque town of Sintra for a walking tour through its enchanting historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We’ ll also sample travesseiros, the iconic puff pastry first introduced here. Upon arrival in Cascais, we’ ll off on a hike along the scenic
coastline followed by a visit to its Old Town. Later, we’ ll visit a padel club to engage with locals in a friendly game of this popular local sport. Meals: B | Hotel in Cascais
DAY 9 • Cascais • Lisbon This morning, we’ ll drive along Estrada Marginal, the beautiful coastal road linking Cascais to Lisbon, the Portuguese capital. Then, we’ ll enjoy a walking tour of Belém, including Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We’ ll also stop at Belém Tower, the Monument to the Discoveries; and indulge in a pastel de nata, a creamy tart originally created by the monks of Jeronimos in 1837. Then, a walking tour through its historic squares following by a chance to try the city’ s iconic drink, ginginha. This evening, we’ ll enjoy our Farewell Dinner at a restaurant in Cascais. DAY 10 • Return to U. S. We’ ll head the airport this morning for our return flights to the U. S.
