Greco-Roman towns in the world. by the first century B. C., Jerash was a prosperous Roman town known for its colonnaded streets, temples, and amphitheaters— and for hosting celebrated poets like Virgil and Horace. Later, we’ ll stop at Amman’ s highest hill to visit the ancient Citadel and ruins of the Temple of Hercules. Then, after passing by the restored 6,000-seat Roman Theatre, we’ ll set off on a guided walk through the bustling souks of the city’ s historic downtown area. DAY 4 • Dana • Mount Nebo • Madaba Depart Amman and journey south to the Dana Biosphere Reserve, Jordan’ s largest nature reserve. Along the way, we’ ll stop at Mount Nebo, the sacred Judeo-Christian pilgrimage site said to be where Moses viewed the Promised Land he was not destined to reach. After taking in the sweeping views of the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea from the summit, we’ ll head to Madaba, one of the world’ s oldest Christian cities. At St. George’ s Church, we’ ll view the earliest surviving mosaic map of the Holy Land. Meals: B, D | Dana Guest House or similar |
DAY 5 • Dana Biosphere Reserve • Nature hike to Wadi Feynan • Bedouin cultural immersion • Petra Today features a nature hike through the scenic desert and mountain landscapes of the Dana Biosphere Reserve, home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. After a walk through Dana, a charming village of some 70 traditional stone-built homes, we’ ll set off |
along ancient hiking trails into the sweeping desert wadis( riverbed valleys) and rugged mountain terrain on our way to Wadi Feynan, where we’ ll enjoy an authentic glimpse of Bedouin culture when we sit down with members of the local community for a traditional Bedouin lunch. DAY 6 • Petra • Cooking lesson • Home- Hosted Dinner Today we’ ll discover the“ Lost City of Petra,” a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Jordan’ s greatest archaeological treasure. This red-hued city carved in the sandstone cliffs and hidden in a canyon once stood at the crossroads of flourishing caravan trade routes— until it became forgotten by the outside world for centuries. After returning to our hotel, we’ ll enjoy another glimpse of Jordanian culture when we help to prepare a traditional dish during a cooking lesson followed by a Home-Hosted Dinner. DAY 7 • Aqaba • Red Sea glass-bottom boat ride • Truck tour of Wadi Rum We’ ll depart Petra and head to Aqaba, the Red Sea port. Upon arrival, we’ ll have lunch while we enjoy a relaxing glass-bottom boat ride and the chance to witness the colorful coral reefs and marine life visible beneath the crystal-clear waters of the Red Sea. Then, we’ ll set off on a truck tour through Wadi Rum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The largest and most magnificent of Jordan’ s desert landscapes, the region is filled with dramatic canyons, sandstone cliffs, and windcarved rock formations. DAY 8 • Sunrise at Wadi Rum with camel ride • Overland to the Dead Sea Today, we’ ll rise in the pre-dawn hours and take a walking tour deep into the desert with our Trip Experience Leader. As we witness the sun rising over the desert landscapes, we’ ll understand why T. E. Lawrence described Wadi Rum as“ vast, echoing, and Godlike.” Then, we’ ll saddle up in a camel caravan for our return journey to camp. After our final camp breakfast, we’ ll depart Wadi Rum and drive to the Dead Sea, arriving late afternoon.

DAY 9 • Dead Sea • Yoga class • Bethany Beyond the Jordan Begin the day with relaxing yoga session with an instructor at a scenic locale overlooking the Dead Sea. Then, we’ ll drive out to an archaeological site called Bethany Beyond the Jordan. Located just off the banks of the Jordan River, the sacred ruins found at this UNESCO World Heritage Site include a small pool believed to be site where John the Baptist baptized Jesus of Nazareth. Later, we’ ll enjoy a Farewell Dinner at our hotel.

DAY 10 • Return to U. S. After breakfast, we’ ll depart for the airport for our return flights to the U. S.
