DAY 3 • Tokyo Our Tokyo discoveries begin in Nihonbashi, the city’ s historic center( literally— the zeromile marker for Japan’ s highway network starts here) and a major commercial hub. After lunch, visit the Asakusa district, home to Senso-ji— Tokyo’ s oldest temple, dating back to 628 A. D. Stroll along Nakamise, a lively street lined with shops leading to the temple. DAY 4 • Sumo demonstration • Sushimaking lesson • Mori Art Museum Discover the art of sumo at a club in Shinjuku, where you’ ll meet athletes and learn about the sport’ s thousand-year history through an interactive demonstration. Afterward, get a hands-on sushi-making lesson from an expert chef, where we’ ll taste the results of our creation over lunch. DAY 5 • Bullet train to Kyoto • Nishiki market Ride to Kyoto today aboard a shinkansen bullet train, one of the fastest trains in the world. We’ ll arrive at Nishiki Market, referred to as“ Kyoto’ s Kitchen,” this five-block-long row of shops and restaurants attracts locals and visitors alike with its fresh produce, seafood, cookware, and more. Afterwards, we’ ll check in to our hotel, and have the |

DAY 6 • Kyoto • Arashiyama • Nijo Castle Explore Kyoto, which was once the capital of Japan for more than 1,000 years. We’ ll drive to Arashiyama to visit Tenryuji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and stroll through its tranquil Zen gardens and iconic bamboo grove. Next, we’ ll discover Nijo Castle, another UNESCO site built in 1603 for Tokugawa Ieyasu— the first shogun of the Edo period. Meals: B, D | Hotel in Kyoto
DAY 7 • Kinkakuji Temple • Fushimi Inari Shrine • Conversation with local maiko Discover Kinkakuji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site sometimes known as the Temple of the Golden Pavilion. We’ ll also visit Fushimi Inari Shrine, famous for its pathway of 10,000 crimson torii gates marking a trail for travelers. In the afternoon, we’ ll witness a traditional dance demonstration by a maiko, or apprentice geisha( known in Kyoto as geikos). Like geishas, maikos don traditional kimonos and often have special talents, such as dancing, singing, or playing an instrument. After the maiko’ s performance, she’ ll share stories about her life and why she chose this profession, and can answer any questions we may have. Meals: B, L, D | Hotel in Kyoto
DAY 8 • Bullet train to Hiroshima • Okonomiyaki-making lesson • Miyajima Island Take another shinkansen bullet train to Hiroshima, where we’ ll enjoy a hands-on okonomiyaki cooking lesson, preparing this local favorite fried dish and sharing lunch together. Next, we ride by ferry to Miyajima, an island that was once a site of Shinto worship. Miyajima is famously the site of Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, renowned for its“ floating” torii gate emerging from the placid waters around the island. Then hike the trails of Mount Misen, whose primeval forests are home to wild monkeys and deer, and whose summit overlooks the Seto Inland Sea. Meals: B, L | Hotel in Hiroshima

DAY 9 • Hiroshima’ s Peace Memorial Park
• Home-Hosted Visit Hiroshima’ s name is forever linked with the detonation of the atomic bomb on August 6, 1945. We’ ll dive into this legacy during a visit to the Peace Memorial Park, built near the center of the A-bomb blast. The museum gives space for A-bomb survivors to share their stories from that fateful day— though in many cases, their stories are shared by designated successors as the population of survivors continues to dwindle. We’ ll hear one such account during our time at the museum. Later, learn more about local culture during a Home-Hosted Visit, sharing tea and conversation at a Hiroshima family’ s table. DAY 10 • Return to U. S. Transfer to the airport for your flight home.
