Transfer overland to Kairouan . Along the way , stop to visit the Roman ruins of Sbeitla , including three temples dedicated to Minerva , Jupiter , and Juno , the gods who protected Rome .

DAY 12 • Explore Kairouan • Home-Hosted Dinner Today we explore Kairouan on a guided walking tour . We ’ ll begin with a visit to the Abou Zamaa al-Balawi mausoleum , one of the most venerated sites in the city . Next , we ’ ll visit the Great Mosque , the oldest Muslim place of worship in Africa . Later , we ’ ll venture on foot to the city medina , a UNESCO World Heritage Site and thriving center of Tunisian culture . This evening , we ’ ll enjoy a Home-Hosted Dinner with a local family .

DAY 13 • Kairouan • Optional El Djem tour Today is for explorations on your own , or you can join an optional tour of El Djem , home to a Roman amphitheater — a UNESCO World Heritage Site . The optional tour also includes lunch and a visit to a mosaics crafts center .

DAY 15 • Sidi Bou Said • Ancient Carthage • North Africa American Cemetery
After a discovery walk through the village of Sidi Bou Said , we ’ ll visit the ruin site of ancient Carthage . We ’ ll also pay respects to the soldiers who liberated Tunisia during World War II with a visit to the North Africa American Cemetery and Memorial . Enjoy a Farewell Dinner this evening .

DAY 16 • Return to U . S . Transfer to the airport for your flight home , or begin our Timeless Morocco : From the Souks of Marrakesh to Seaside Casablanca post-trip extension .

DAY 14 • Kairouan • Explore Hammamet • Sidi Bou Said • Controversial Topic : Women ’ s rights in Tunisia
Travel overland to Sidi Bou Said today . Along the way , visit Hammamet , a town of white-washed houses and some of Tunisia ’ s finest beaches . We ’ ll explore its coastal medina before continuing on to Sidi Bou Said , where we ’ ll meet with a local expert to discuss the Controversial Topic of women ’ s rights in Tunisia to gain an understanding of gender inequality in the Arab world .
