Today , discover Monte Verde , the island ’ s highest peak and one of the greenest areas in São Vicente . After , we ’ ll explore the alluring charm of Bías das Gatas , a natural bay and popular venue for music festivals , following free time .

DAY 13 • Fogo • Visit São Filipe • Chã das Caldeiras visit
Explore the volcanic island of Fogo , whose name means “ fire ” in Portuguese . Then , we ’ ll drive to Chã das Caldeiras , a small community located inside the Pico de Fogo volcanic crate , and home to many coffee farms and vineyards . Chã is the only area in Cape Verde that produces and exports high-quality wine . We ’ ll have the opportunity to tour one of the wine cellars .

DAY 14 • At sea Say farewell to Cape Verde as we set sail to Banjul , the capital city of tiny The Gambia . It will take us two full days of cruising to reach The Gambia , during which time you can enjoy the ship ’ s amenities and the company of your fellow travelers .

DAY 16 • Banjul , The Gambia • Explore Tanji Fishing Center • Yabouy Home Cooking Class • Visit crocodile pool
Today we ’ ll explore Banjul , the capital city of the tiny West African nation of The Gambia . We ’ ll visit the Tanji Fishing Center , where locals come to buy , sell , and smoke fish caught in the nearby waters . We ’ ll also enjoy a cooking class at Yabouy Home Cooking , the home of founder , Ida Cham Njai , and savor our meal together . Then , we ’ ll drive inland to Kachikally , a crocodileinfested pool that ’ s traditionally used for sacred fertility rituals .

DAY 17 • Banjul • Kunta Kinteh Island • Visit Museum of Slavery
We ’ ll take a ferry to Albreda , once a slave trading fort , to visit the Museum of Slavery for a harrowing look into the past of the slave trade in The Gambia . Then , we ’ ll visit Kunta Kinteh Island , a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former base of the African slave trade . The island is named for Kunta Kinteh , the main character on the television show Roots , whose ancestral home is nearby .

DAY 18 • Banjul • Makasuto Culture Forest Begin today driving to Makasuto Culture Forest , a beautiful and diverse woodland reserve with several ecosystems , including expansive riverine , palm and hardwood-forests , mangrove creeks , savannas , and salt-flats . Here , we ’ ll go on a nature walk in the company of a local guide who will point out various tree species , such as mahogany , rhun palms , and baobab . We may even see different species of birds , monkeys , and lizards along the way . This evening , your ship sets sail for Dakar .

DAY 19 • Dakar , Senegal • Disembark ship • Return to U . S .
This morning , disembark the ship in Dakar , Senegal , and catch your return flight home to the U . S . Or , begin your Senegal & Morocco : Dakar , Casablanca & Marrakesh post-trip extension .
