DAY 2 • Discover Huaca Pucllana Join your fellow travelers — including those who took our Colombia : Medellín & Colonial Cartagena pre-trip extension — for a Welcome Briefing and orientation walk through the stylish Miraflores district of Lima . Later , discover the ruins of Huaca Pucllana , an ancient pyramid from a pre-Inca civilization located within the city .

DAY 3 • Overland to Paracas We ’ ll drive to our hotel in Paracas , enjoying lunch along the way , arriving at the hotel later this afternoon .

DAY 4 • Nazca & Palpa Lines overflight • Pisco distillery visit
From the airport in Pisco , we ’ ll board a small plane for an aerial view of the Nazca and Palpa Lines — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — in the desert of southern Peru . More than a thousand of these mysterious etchings — including geometric shapes and animals , such as monkeys , dogs , fish , birds , and spiders — can be seen over a span of over 170 square miles . Later , we ’ ll visit a pisco distillery to see how Peru ’ s favorite brandy is made .

DAY 5 • Ballestas Islands boat cruise • Paracas Dunes excursion
This morning , we head to Ballestas Islands , a small , craggy archipelago with a dense wildlife population . We tour the islands by boat to take in the impressive natural wonders and wildlife found here . This afternoon , we set out for the desert , where we ’ ll navigate the Paracas dunes on 4x4 dune buggy vehicles , allowing for maximum exploration and discovery of this sandy environment .

DAY 6 • Fly to Iquitos We ’ ll drive back to Lima for our flight to Iquitos today . Meals : B , D | Double Tree by Hilton Hotel Iquitos or similar
DAY 7 • Discover Amazon Forever Biopark • Explore Iquitos
We ’ ll start the day with a tour of the Amazon Forever Biopark , where we ’ ll get a close look at manatees , anacondas , parrots , and other protected rain forest wildlife . This afternoon , discover Iquitos on a walking tour , and learn about its historical ties to the rubber boom of the 19th and 20th centuries .

DAY 8 • Explore Belén floating market • Rain forest trail walk • Evening boat ride
Discover the shantytown of Belén and its floating market , then board a boat to ride down the Amazon to our first rain forest lodge . This afternoon , we ’ ll enjoy a walking tour along one of the lodge ’ s nature trails . After dinner , you can choose to join an evening boat ride to hear the sounds of the Amazon after dark .

DAY 9 • Visit Yagua indigenous community • Amazon boat excursion
This morning , visit with members of the local Yagua community to learn more about this indigenous people ’ s way of life . In the afternoon , enjoy a boat excursion on the Amazon , in search of pink dolphins , sloths , and other exotic native fauna . We ’ ll also have the chance to fish for piranha , the toothed predatory fish that is a staple of the local diet .
