A College Student’s Ode to a Free Cupcake
Gabriel Brinton
Pink and yellow
Cupcake hello
In a minute, you’ll be mine
Squat and frosted
I am lost in
Your raspberry-lemon shine
Fluffy, chewy,
Tart, come to me
My very world has come undone
O, pastry finest
Cake divinest
Now I’m sad that you are gone
Hello, Good Morning
Rowan Baxter-Green
The world said “daisies” and they came
The World said “dandelions” and they burst forth
And pocked the grass with yellow
And the world said “tulip, hyacinth, narcissus”
And they lifted their heads from slumber
The world whispered “maple, oak”,
And the buds unfurled green
The world called out “catbird” and they returned
While the juncos took their leave
The world roared “chipmunk, groundhog, squirrel”
And they poked their heads from their burrows
To see what the commotion was
The world said “good morning”
And we stumbled out into the sun
And marveled
At the flowers and the trees and the life all around us
The world said “good morning”
And we awoke into spring
