Overfishing JUNE 2014 | Page 2

Overfishing is the catching of fish faster than they can reproduce. This is an urgent and devastating issue, and may be the single biggest threat to ocean ecosystems. Today, 85 percent of the world's fisheries are either fully exploited, overexploited or have collapsed (1). The global fishing fleet is operating at 2.5 times the sustainable level there are too many boats chasing a dwindling number of fish (7). Fisheries are catching large amounts of large fish,of those large fish who have lived longer and those that are slow to reproduce are among the most vulnerable. Unfortunately, of the 307 shark species assessed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (4), 50 are listed as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered. This is a happening right now .
