When I was a graduate student at Adelphi University , my favorite professor , Dr . Cok would ask for volunteers to go on short oceanographic research cruises . The longest of these was ten days , off the coast of New York , right after Hurricane Agnes hit the state . I was on a 120-foot buoy tender that was tossed about in the waves until the effects of the storm subsided and the ocean returned to tranquility .
