When I was a graduate student at Adelphi University, my favorite professor, Dr. Cok would ask for volunteers to go on short oceanographic research cruises. The longest of these was ten days, off the coast of New York, right after Hurricane Agnes hit the state. I was on a 120-foot buoy tender that was tossed about in the waves until the effects of the storm subsided and the ocean returned to tranquility.
