Coast Guard had not always been on Joe’s mind. It was a series of events that started when he was a boy. His mother Lucy was Barb’s sister and they all did most everything together. Then 9/11 happened and his aunt Barb called his mother to update her throughout the day on events taking place. Joe became aware that special day about the USCG.

Seven years later, following the untimely death of Joe’s mother Lucy, his Aunt Barb started to bring teenager Joe to Flotilla meetings to divert him from the grief of his personal loss. All the members of Flotilla 77 embraced, and welcomed him at both meetings and Flotilla outings. He appreciated their warmth and kindness but also a keen insight to the professionalism and sense of duty all the members displayed.
