Shipmates:

At the beginning of the year we all heard about a virus in Wuhan, China. It was in China, why do I have to worry? Well, it started travelling, and fast. In March, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a worldwide pandemic. Worse than people getting sick, they were dying, and fast, and a lot at one time. Hospital systems were overwhelmed around the world. Supplies running short, runs on items at markets, and not a disinfecting wipe to be had. Then, the US goes on lockdown, isolation, social distancing. Closure of business, restaurants, and many others affected. Which brings us to the effect on the U.S. Coast Guard, and specifically, the Auxiliary.

In March, our First District Commander, Admiral Tiongson, halted all Auxiliary activities. This was done for many reasons, but the most important was for your and your families' health and safety. But this was not done just here in D1SR, it was nationwide

So what can we do? Now is a great opportunity to take all your online courses. All your recurring core training classes. BQCII, Intro to Risk Management, Leadership courses, ICS Courses, Marine safety classes. The list, while not endless, is extensive and will help you build your skill set. What about APC or Flotilla Commander Online, for those seeking elected office in the future? It is real nice to see the use of technology and Flotillas and Division having meetings electronically, or even just a get together.

The most important tool we have is our members. I say it all the time. Please, reach out to each other. Check on all our members, not by email, but by phone. Make sure everyone has the things they need. If someone is going out to the store, maybe you can pick up something for someone to avoid a trip.

Please follow the guidelines, both of your state, and the Coast Guard. While your State may start opening marina and boat ramps, our direction as auxiliarists comes from the First District Commander. When it is safe, we will begin operations. But only when it is safe.

It is very sad and unfortunate that this disease has affected our members and families. To those who have passed or are ill, my thoughts, prayers and good wishes are with you. Please know that, while I cannot be with you in person, I am there through thought and prayer.

Stay well and be safe.

Respectfully,

Semper Paratus. A phrase we all in the Coast Guard embrace from the day we join. Always Ready. But who could be ready for the Pandemic of 2020, Covid-19, aka the coronavirus.
