CCORDING TO THE COAST GUARD, aquatic invasive
species (AIS) account for more than $9 billion of damage each year in the United States. Having no natural native enemies, these invasive plants and animals spread rapidly and degrade entire watersheds.
They destroy breeding grounds for native species, competing with them for food and oxygen; clog municipal outfall and intake pipes, requiring expensive replacement; degrade recreational fishing and boating areas; and in many cases, pose a threat to human health and safety.
