N THE MORNING of Friday, 25

January 2019, due to rising

water and ice, several vessels had broken loose from their moorings on the Hudson River (North River). Among the vessels were eight barges and the Captain J.P. III, a four-deck cruise ship.

Within the 3-mile stretch from Troy to Albany, New York, the floating behemoths were carried along by the current mixed with fields of ice floes. A good number of the vessels managed to avoid seriously colliding with other vessels or obstacles – except for the Captain J.P. III.

The 300-foot cruise ship struck the Congress Street Bridge in Troy, New York, before wedging under the Livingston Avenue Bridge, a railroad bridge connecting Albany and Rensselaer. The ship was trapped under the span where it could cause structural damage to the railroad bridge, potentially severing the Empire railways to the northwest.
