Shipmates

Many of you know me well and have worked with me in the past, but for those who do not, I'd like share my leadership philosophy. I believe that together we will be a well-trained, highly diverse force of volunteers standing ready to serve the boating public and support the Coast Guard.

By embracing what each of us brings to the table and tapping that wealth of resources, together we can achieve these goals, realize this vision.

I believe that our greatest resource is our members. Our diverse members selflessly dedicate their talents, their time, and their faith to the commitment of realizing our vision.

I live by my watchwords: Respect, Integrity, and Trust and will strive to develop those traits in others.

I see it as my responsibility to create an environment that makes all things possible. It is also my responsibility to create a positive environment, where members are inspired and motivated to achieve goals. This would be an environment where members are empowered, where their thoughts and opinions are valued as it is also my duty to instill confidence in all and praise those deserving.

I envision myself as a servant leader and one who has been influenced by experiences in law enforcement, as well as authors Robert Greenleaf and Simon Sinek.

While realizing the vision is important, I also realize that creating an opportunity for team members to grow, an opportunity for them to learn to accept responsibility and most importantly, creating an opportunity for them to lead.

As we work toward this objective, I will endeavor to identify and develop contingencies for whatever challenges may present themselves.

I consider communicating realistic expectations, developing new leaders and using technology to promote efficiency paramount.

Semper Paratus.

Respectfully,

Gus Formato
