US Coast Guard “Out East” Forces Recognized
With Dorothy Pell Savage Good Samaritan Award
N JUNE 25, 2016, the US Coast Guard’s “Out East” Forces were recognized with the Dorothy
Pell Savage Good Samaritan award at an annual dinner held to help raise capital for the
East End Hospice Center in Quiogue, New York. Dorothy Pell Savage created the award to recognize those that help others in memory of her mother, who was cared for in hospice through the end of her life. Dorothy Pell Savage’s adult children have maintained the award in their mother’s memory for nearly 2 decades now.
When considering who to honor in 2016, the board of the hospital wondered who can be considered a greater selfless helper of those in need than the US Coast Guard. In awarding the crystal commemorative bowl, they wanted to recognize all the Sector Long Island Sound units that serve the east end of Long Island:
- Station Shinnecock
- Station Montauk
- Sector Field Office Moriches
- D1SR Division 18
The Sector was awarded the crystal commemorative bowl and it was
accepted by CDR Kevin Reed. Each “Out East” unit was recognized with
a commemorative framed certificate, accepted by the unit leader –
BOSN Richard Berg for Sta Shinnecock, BMCS Eric Best for Sta Montauk,
CWO James Potts for SFO Moriches and DCDR18 Marion Sarafin for
USCGAux Division 18.
CAPT Byron Black represented the First Coast Guard District and the author represented D1SR. Also aboard was CDR William Grossman, Director of the Auxiliary, First District Southern Region, and LT Will Stewart, Marine Safety Division/Coram, and BMCS Jeffrey Graham, USCGC Bonito. In all, over 30 members of USCG Forces – active-duty, reserves and auxiliarists, participated in the evening’s event and were honored by the over 800 fellow citizens of “Out East.”
All in all, a wonderful night for wonderful cause – and terrific fellowship for Out East’s Good Samaritans!
