IEUTENANT COMMANDER GROSSMAN

is a native of West Islip, New York, and is a 1994 graduate of the State University of New York, at Buffalo where he earned a Bachelors of Science Degree in Legal Studies. He reported aboard Sector New York in July 2011 as the Chief of the Investigations Division, where he is responsible for determining the causal factors involving commercial accidents within the Port of New York and New Jersey as well as the Hudson River. In January of 2015 he transitioned over as Sector New York’s Chief, Waterways Management Division where he was responsible for Marine Event permitting, Aids to Navigation, ice operations and major marine construction projects throughout the Port of New York and New Jersey.

Lieutenant Commander Grossman enlisted in October of 1997 and was initially assigned to the Coast Guard Cutter Penobscot Bay, home ported in Bayonne, New Jersey. Subsequent assignments include Marine Safety Office Charleston, Activities New York, Marine Safety Detachment Coram and Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown.

As a Port Operations Petty Officer at Marine Safety Office Charleston, South Carolina he was involved with environmental protection, Port State Control examinations, oil transfer facility and containerized cargo inspections. Following this tour Lieutenant Commander Grossman was accepted to and graduated from Officer Candidate School at the United States Coast Guard Academy in February 2001 where he was assigned to Activities New York. As the Chief of the Facilities Division during the tragic events of September 11th he greatly assisted with the safety and security of the Port of New York and New Jersey. From 2005-2008 Lieutenant Commander Grossman was assigned as the Supervisor of Marine Safety Detachment Coram where he was responsible for the inspection of over 150 inspected vessels, environmental protection of hundreds of miles of coastline and the security of dozens of passenger ferries and oil terminals. Most recently Lieutenant Commander Grossman served as an instructor at the Coast Guard’s premier Training Center teaching hundreds of officers the federal requirements relating to foreign and domestic vessel inspections and casualty investigations.

Lieutenant Commander Grossman’s personal awards include three Coast Guard Commendation Medals, the Coast Guard 9-11 Medal, the Coast Guard Achievement Medal, and the Commandant’s Letter of Commendation, also multiple service and unit awards. He has earned the Permanent Marine Safety insignia.

Lieutenant Commander Grossman is married to the former Deborah Canzoneri and currently resides in Rocky Point, New York. Lieutenant Commander and Mrs. Grossman have a 12 year old son, Jack.
