So, my advice for those in management positions is this: “Take charge of this post and all government property in view…” It is your department. Run it.

We want exceptional people in leadership, without exception. And that means leaders with the courage to answer any question put to them – rather than ignore another member who has asked a question or for permission to do something. “I’m a grown-up. I can take ‘no.’ Simple human decency would require at least that...”

Why do you think people with no hours pay their dues? Because they say to themselves, “this is the year I’m going to get my act together. I’m tired of being the ‘80 percent’ – I want to be part of the ‘20 percent!’” Let us, the 20 percent, help them.

In the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we love our country and we love the

United States Coast Guard. This binds us together in trust, in faith and in hope. Remember - if what we get is what we give, let's give it all we got.

Happy, healthy and blessed New Year. Thank you for your service and God bless us, our families, the US Coast Guard and the United States of America.

Respectfully,

Vin Pica
