The ceremony took place at the Old Bermuda Inn on Staten Island.
Other notable guests from the District included Mr. Agostino Formato, DCOS, Mr. Steven Krok, Commodore’s Aide, Mr. George Reilly, Auxiliary Sector New York Coordinator, and Ms. Karen Wagner, Auxiliary Affairs Specialist.
We could not have hoped for a more impressive roster of distinguished guests.
From the Invocation to CDR Moose’s closing remarks, the recurring theme was commitment.
Commitment to duty, commitment to each other, and commitment to our oath, expressed so eloquently during the swearing-in ceremony, all may sound quaint and familiar to some, as they are reiterated year after year, after year. To others however, the words are seared into the fabric of their beings; tested and proven in the laboratories of Public Education Classes, Safety Patrols, dockside Vessel Examinations, Public Affairs Events, Coast Guard Operational Support Missions, and many other mission areas.
As asserted by our active duty Auxiliary guests, Division 14 has demonstrated that commitment is more than a passing interest; more than a convenient catch-all plea for active support. To Division 14, it is a way of life. It is a solemn pledge that is affirmed at the Change of Watch, and is practiced month in and month out during the following year. This affirmation is what makes this event so important to us and so high in rank on our Division Calendar.
During his remarks, CAPT Loebl stressed that two years after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, Division 14 had performed to a degree expected from much larger divisions in the District. CDR Walsh also expressed his deep appreciation for the presence and support that Division 14 has and continues to afford Coast Guard Station New York.
Leaders were sworn in and exceptional service was recognized.
Renewal of spirit and commitment to mission are the crux of the Change of Watch Ceremony. They encompass the reaffirmation of our values and our dedication to perform one of the highest callings of our nation, the preserving of life, limb and property.
Division 14 is honored to practice this tradition year after year, in a manner which preserves its dignity, solemnity and enduring importance.
