Two Flotillas, One Coastie!

By USCG Auxiliary Division 18

Coast Guard Auxiliary volunteers from two local flotillas worked together to bring our common message of safety on the water to over 40,000 visitors to the 2014 Greenport New York Maritime Festival, held September 21-23. The festival “is dedicated to the men and women, past and present, who came from other ports to toil on the sea and shore during times of peace and war, and to build a prosperous seaport and friendly harbor that became known as Greenport on the East End of Long Island’s North Fork.”

Past FCO 18-02 Sag Harbor Tish Bouboulis offered her flotilla’s horse trailer, refashioned as a public relations trailer and stocked with USCGAUX literature, life jackets, ropes, banners, posters and brochures, as a home base for volunteers from Flotilla 18-08 Southold.

Festival visitors were taught knot tying, the importance of wearing life jackets and shown the differences between the different classes of jackets. They heard about our mission of safety on the water, and were given the opportunity to sign up for vessel exams, education courses, and flotilla membership.
