HARTFORD, Conn. - Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has declared the summer of 2015 to be "Connecticut's Coast Guard Summer," his office announced Dec. 5.
Malloy has officially recognized July, August, and part of September as two-month-long celebration of the Coast Guard's 225th anniversary, the Coast Guard's ties with Connecticut, as well as the port city of New London.
Events during the summer will recognize the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Coast Guard Academy in New London, and the planned National Coast Guard Museum, to be built on the city’s waterfront and set to open in 2018.
Connecticut's Coast Guard Summer will run from July 10 through Sept. 12. Festivities will get underway during New London's annual Sailfest celebration in July, which routinely draws 100,000 visitors to the city’s waterfront. It will conclude with Connecticut's Maritime Heritage Festival, also held in New London, after Labor Day. The Coast Guard Academy was formally established in New London in 1915. New London is also home to Coast Guard Station New London, the Coast Guard Research and Development Center, the Marine Safety Lab, and the International Ice Patrol.
New London officials hope that before the celebration gets underway Congress will formally designate New London as a "Coast Guard City," a title shared by 16 cities across the United States that share particularly close ties with the Coast Guard. The city’s application is pending.
