Too Much Focus on Mutual Funds

have been a long-time reader and like

I the recent turn of events — reinclusion of equity shares recommendations , and lessening focus on Mutual Funds and their promotional features ( though it is still higher

than preferred ). Outlook Money ( and Intelligent Investor in its earlier avatar ) stood on four pillars - investing , saving , spending , and retirement . Somehow this distinction has watered down over the years and mutual funds seem to occupy the bulk of your attention . You might want to re-evaluate this . Gaurav Mashruwala ’ s articles are great . Lucidly written and bring a smile . I like the point that celebrities help to get the point across better . There are some pillars of financially knowledgeable people and perhaps you could put them in one page and repeat them , so that a new reader gets a summary . Incidentally , I have learned some key lessons from Outlook Money over the years and I am listing them here :
■ Endowment insurance policies sold by insurance companies aren ’ t smart investments . You are better off separating the two – risks and returns . For ‘ risk ’ cover , buy a low-cost term policy . And for ‘ returns ,’ invest in mutual funds ( equity , debt or mix ).
■ Property is a highly illiquid asset . After the first flat purchase ( for self use ), the second investment in property needs to be really thought through . And given an option , go for a ready-to-occupy flat instead of an under-construction flat . It will cost more for sure but you will save yourself the risk of delays and non-completion .
■ Investing in gold – in the form of jewellery – isn ’ t a smart investment . ( When you resell , 10 – 15 per cent will be deducted for impurity / remaking charges .)
■ Keeping FDs ( fixed deposits ) with companies who promise a rate of interest better than bank deposits come with risks . When it comes to repayment , you will have a hard time getting the principal back .
■ For long-term wealth creation – and beating inflation – one shouldn ’ t ignore the stock market . Further , as a newbie in the stock market , you are better off investing through mutual funds than in specific companies shares directly .
