hiking path . “ It ’ s remarkable that the old ski trails are still maintained all these years later ,” notes Adolphson . “ They ’ re an incredible piece of history .” For those who wish to start their journey in Lee and proceed westward toward Laura ’ s Tower , the trailhead for the Beartown Mountain Trail is located just south of where Beartown Mountain Road meets Willow Street and Pine Street . Beartown Mountain also is home to the Beartown Loop , a marvelous network of mountain biking trails . The Beartown Loop trails are accessible from Beartown State Forest Road .
Steep Trails
Prospect Overlook North Adams Department of Conservation & Recreation Hikers in search of a challenging and invigorating adventure will no doubt take pleasure in trekking to the Prospect Overlook via the Appalachian Trail . To begin this 3.5-mile “ out and back ” hike , start at the trailhead on Pattison Road in North Adams and head south . Hikers will encounter steep ascents , which will bring them to an elevated overlook with sublime views of the surrounding mountains and forests .

For another challenging hike , take the Roaring Brook Trail to Deerhead Falls . This 3.9-mile “ out and back ” hike is fairly difficult , but the
views are splendid — and the trail is also great for birding . The trailhead can be accessed from Roaring Brook Road in Williamstown , just off of Route 7 , and is open year-round .
Trail of the Ledges & Overbrook Trail Lenox Massachusetts Audubon Society Trail of the Ledges & Overbrook Trail loop is a challenging 2.6-mile route that is sure to appeal to more experienced hikers . Trailhead access can be found on West Mountain Road in Lenox . The trail is popular , so expect to see other hikers during peak season . The elevation gain is steep ( 938 feet ) and dogs are not allowed . A bench on top of Lenox Mountain provides a welcoming seat for hikers who prefer to take in the surrounding scenery in a relaxed and contemplative fashion . Brooks and small falls abound , and the view at the top is glorious .
