Springtime features birdwatching opportunities , both by ear and eye , including accessible programs designed to engage participants of all abilities . “ The rising column of warm air on sunny days in spring and fall provides the perfect lift for migrating hawks , helping them conserve energy during their 3,000-mile journeys ,” says Haig , referring to a Hawk Watch held at the Glen this past September . “ Even on a slow day , we observed around 50 hawks soaring by .” Shifting from sky to land , visitors also can gain an intimate glimpse into the lives of often-overlooked salamanders and frogs . Later in the season , the meadow becomes an ideal location for firefly viewing . The Glen ’ s trail network offers many opportunities for those looking to get outdoors . Many of these trails interconnect with the extensive Mount Greylock State Reservation trail system , weaving seamlessly up the back of the eastern reserve . This linkage enables visitors to explore from the Glen to Mount Greylock ’ s summit through one of the most contiguous and ecologically significant forested areas in the Berkshires . Tucked away at the base of the access road for the Greylock Glen Outdoor Center , Peck ’ s Falls , a 0.7-mile steep trail , rewards hikers with two beautiful waterfalls . The trailhead is easy to miss but well worth finding , featuring a 50-foot lower cascade and 12-foot upper drop . For hikers seeking a challenge , the Bellows Pipe to Ragged Mountain Trail provides a moderately strenuous five-mile hike , offering panoramic views from craggy Ragged Mountain . On this trek , detours include a stop at Ribbon Falls Trail and a return descent on the iconic Thunderbolt Trail . For biking enthusiasts , the Gould Road trailhead offers a launch point for a range of adventures , including a scenic three-mile ride along the Rock Maple Trail to Bitter Sweet Trail .
