CAPTURING THE COAST
As an island nation, we lay claim to some
st unning coast al landscapes that are always
ripe for exploration. Get out there and tast e
the salt, with our select ion of books…
Populated by a diverse and entrancing
menagerie of creatures – including tigers,
lions, bears, orangutans,armadillos, sea
horses and jellyfi sh –Flach’s latest book is
just as compelling as his earlier publications.
Predominantly shot in a st udio setting, the
images are imbued with a sense of surrealism,
and refl ect traditions of conventional
portraiture photography in their composition.
The eff ect is to disorientate us, remove our
preconceptions, while playing with our expect
ations. Flach’s approach reveals the animals’
behaviour in unfamiliar ways, and a key
aim of his work is to highlight the connect
ions between humans and animals. This is
something he achieves in the hyperreal detail
that charact erises the images, for example
revealing horse embryos,a photograph of a
luminous mouse, and the fi ngerprints of a
chimpanzee. A collect ion of texts by author
Lewis Blackwell provides insights into
the concepts that underpin the project ,and
contextualises the images.

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the publication
of Wainwright’s guide, A Coast to Coast Walk, the BBC
has created a book to accompany the TV series that
followed Countryfile star Julia Bradbury’s re-tracing
of Wainwright’s grand traverse. All six st ages of the
famous route are covered, and there are small but
gorgeous landscape shots, but this is a book about the
journey. What really makes it is Julia’s amusing and
entertaining personal commentary.
