Bear Grylls descends off a cliff in Whakatane,
about 350 km north of Auckland in New Zealand.
After seven seasons, in 2012, Discovery channel
dropped the TV show that made 39-year-old
Edward Michaels “Bear” Grylls famous across
the planet. This year, the intrepid British
adventurer started a show on NBC, “Get Out
Alive”, a reality series with 10 teams competing
to win a $500,000 prize, while avoiding inevitable
elimination in New Zealand’s South Island. He
also launched an eponymous Survival Academy
in the Scottish Highlands, open to anyone willing
to learn how to stay alive in the wilderness. In
this issue of The Outdoor Journal, read about
the experiences of our correspondent while
surviving a shorter, family-friendly version of the
course. in 2014, the BG team plans to expand
the courses to Africa and the US.
