Lagoa do Fogo in the mountains of São Miguel
Lobos is a small island off Fuerteventura
Pico, on the island of Pico, is Portugal’s highest peak
it amounts to just two years on the
islands and rather less time spent
shuffling the paperwork at home,
spread across twenty years. That’s
left me plenty of time to work on
maybe eighty other guidebook titles,
spreading northwards through Europe
and Britain to the Arctic. I do have
a rather relentless and ruthlessly
efficient method where ‘working’ and
‘walking’ are pretty much the same
thing, and time spent on the trails is
the most important thing.
