ABOUT THE COVER:
PUBLISHER’S NOTE|
Eric Pollard isn’t a name many young skiers or riders will easily recognize. He isn’t an X-Games medalist or
competitor. You won’t see him on television at Olympic qualifying events. Eric is immersed in making your
ski, snowboard and surf experience better. Through art, film, and design, Pollard is an influencer, creator,
ripper and true soul surfer. Whether it’s the skis, boards, clothing, or art, Pollard has a pulse on the outdoor
world. If you’ve ever participated in these sports your paths may have crossed without you even knowing it.
The USA Bouldering Nationals are coming to Central Oregon this February and next. Climbers compete in
regional competitions all over the states for the chance to qualify for Nationals. The competitions will take
place at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds. The first weekend will be the open class with expert and pros
dueling it out for top honors. Some will we positioning themselves to make the first ever USA Climbing
team for the Tokyo Games. The following weekend will be the youth competitions. See full competition
dates in this issue. Spectators are welcome for both open and youth.
The girls Summit XC team made history on December 1, 2018. The Storm became the first team west of
the Mississippi to win the team title at the Nike Cross Nationals. The seven girl team from Bend came in
ahead of other elite running programs from around the country. The team was celebrated with a rally on
December 8th downtown at Crow’s Feet Commons. A massive trophy was presented to the team. Now
the question is, since all the same girls are back next year can they repeat as champions?
Donna Noyes left this earth way too soon. People who didn’t have the privilege of making her acquain-
tance would say 86 was a long life. For people who knew her this was a huge shock. Every morning the
Touchmark resident would start her day swimming or doing yoga at Juniper. Then she would drive the Mt
Bachelor park and ride to catch the bus to the Nordic Center. In the summer months she walked the river
trail and exercised at Juniper. Donna became part of our Nordic family, adopted staff member, cherished
and loved by all. We will miss her stories of world travels and growing up in rural upstate New York. Donna
Noyes had so much more to live and give. Many hearts are broken, but the memory of her kindness will
live on for a long time.

Donna Noyes, seen here, on one of her two trips to the
Antarctic Circle in 2015. Donna traveled to over 90
countries around the globe in her lifetime. Many times it
was more than just being a tourist. Sometimes it was for
humanitarian reasons, but definitely to immerse herself in
other cultures on this planet. At Donna’s service there were
hundreds of photos from her travels. Many of the photos
contained people she had met and children from the vil-
lages she stayed in. Notice she’s wearing the same goggles
she used for skiing at Mt Bachelor. I can’t tell you how
much the world misses you Donna.

Peter Butsch (pictured) is one of my closest
friends and not because we share the same
name. He is kind, generous, humble, and rips
harder on a snowboard than some kids half his
age. He’s 46. November Oregon Backcountry
