4 NOV/DEC 2018 ABOUT THE COVER: PUBLISHER’S NOTE| Ryder Uetrecht is a junior at Summit High School. His rise in the bike world comes at no surprise, both his parents race bikes and race well. Ryder also has plenty of people in Bend to emulate: Chris Horner, Bart Bowen, Ian Boswell, Dylan Caldwell, Lance Haidet, and Cameron Beard just to name a few. We have seen the hard work this kid has put in over the last few years. From a goofy middle schooler who lacked focus to rocksolid, focused, racing machine, climbing onto podiums as a sixteen year old. Ryder Uetrecht has a bright future and we will be watching. “6 PACK” is a small look into the level of dirt jumping in Bend. On a summer’s day I gathered six of the best up and coming bikers in town. Biking is a way of life here in Bend (some even quitting team sports to pursue biking) and these youngsters are improving their skills, elevating their fitness level, taking calculated risk, and the best part, not sitting on the couch playing video games after school. The Warm Spring Session was awesome; I love photographing skateboarding more than any sport. The creativity, determina- tion, danger, and athleticism all comes together into one or more landed tricks. For me no other sport comes close. There are plenty of slams but skaters just get up and try again and again. Celebrating five years publishing! Boy has Bend changed in just five years. If there is one thing for sure Bend is on the map again hard and there is no slowing down in sight. In 2014, I started an outdoor sports publication in Bend because I saw a void in coverage. BendOr was a community publica- tion and it grew quickly because we were affecting people in a positive way. By 2017, things were getting a little stale, we were needing an upgrade in quality and circulation. That upgrade was just what we needed and the timing was perfect. Outdoor Central Oregon hit the streets with a glossy cover and trimmed look. We took off from there, but quickly discovered other communities in Oregon were also lacking coverage of their outdoor scene. Today Outdoor Oregon is the leader in Oregon’s outdoor sports scene. Our growth doesn’t stop in Oregon. People from all over the west are finding Outdoor in hard copy who visit Bend, Hood River, Mt Hood, Redmond, Sisters, Sunriver and Eugene. Our global following is also growing thanks to social media and with our digital issue (Joom). All of this growth couldn’t have happened without the support of our advertisers. A huge thank you goes out to all of our sup- porters. The Outdoor staff, who continually turn out better issue after better issues engaging your audience. Our incredible, readers, fans, followers, communities, and athletes, we appreciate you and never take you for granted. Outdoor is solid, now two new publications are on the way. Stay tuned! - Neil Korn PS. A special thank you goes out to Whit Bazemore for not one, but two photo shoots with Ryder Uet- recht for his feature. Rather than doing any bragging or relaying how much sacrifice has gone into the last 5 years, I’ll leave it to this email I received from Sam Day. Thanks Sam for making it all worth it! “Dude your mag might be the greatest part of being a young athlete in Bend. I can’t tell you how much it means to me and so many others that you are willing to do the work to help us get the publicity we need to be successful in such a competitive environment!” - Sam Day (15-year-old Mtn Bike Slayer) Henry Lanman on a fall trip to black rock Oregon. Great destination in the valley that offers plenty of riding for advanced to experts bikers. -Trevor Lyden 1443 NW Juniper Street Bend, OR 97701 (541) 241-0305 PUBLISHER Neil Korn [email protected] EDITOR Chris Shredwards [email protected] SALES MANAGER Jenna Conrad [email protected] GRAPHIC DESIGN Brian Zager [email protected] SOCIAL MEDIA COORDINATOR Wyatt Wordhouse Contributing Writers Kelly Maer Dr. Oliver Wisco Edmond Wadeson Nick Birdseye Senior Contributing Photographers Mike Albright Pete Alport Jesse Polay Richard Hallman Contributing Photographers Trevor Lyden Dave Adams Whit Bazemore Connor Bellusci Aaron Duarte Candace Sanders Michael Franklin Josh Brownlee Christine Ruana USA Climbing/Greg Mionske Glen Bolin Karen Jones David Visnack For advertising please contact our Sales Manager, Jenna Conrad at [email protected] 5
