4 SEPT/OCT 2018 ABOUT THE COVER: PUBLISHER’S NOTE| While the Climate Change debate rages on all over this planet, there is no debate that, “water is life”. Without water there is no life, and as the world population continues to grow rapidly the demand for clean drinking water will increase. Right now, this minute, there are approximately 2 billion people on Earth who do not have access to clean drinking water or must travel miles each and every day to collect some. Here in Oregon, we have plentiful access to some the best drinking water on the planet. We are beyond lucky and grateful to live in such a awesome place. Is water in Oregon taken for granted? Is there an end- less supply? Do people water acres upon acres of grass for no apparent reason? Yes. As Oregon’s popula- tion increases, so will the demand for water. Conservation should be a debate we can all agree on. For this year’s water issue I wanted to expand beyond just “playing” in the water. There are many, many people, organizations, manufacturers and companies around Oregon doing good work on conservation, education, and action on river and ocean clean up, fish population health, containing farming runoff, and reuse of greywater just to name a few. I wanted to spotlight some our athletes in Oregon who live for a water lifestyle. There are many who enjoy this lifestyle and with Bend’s new River Surf Park, this lifestyle has become a major part of the Bend scene. In Hood River and the Gorge area, the windsports scene rages on as one of the best in the world and with foiling, the sky’s the limit. Bryan Metcalf-Perez finding and delivering on a giant Columbia Gorge double up. Bryan, a long time Gorge local, constantly scouts the horizon - like a seasoned investment banker - search- ing for waves that will yield high returns on his investment. He works hard to bring home the goods and when the moment strikes, Byan usually cashes in with style and his signature Cheshire grin. -Richard Hallman Neil Korn 1443 NW Juniper Street Bend, OR 97701 (541) 241-0305 PUBLISHER Neil Korn [email protected] CONTENTS| It was nearly impossible to get Tim Durtschi and Jonny Sisco together for our traditional cover photo. Tim grew up in Bend and has family here, but now he lives in Jackson, Wyoming. Tim’s photo (bottom) was taken in the TRG retail shop in Jackson after I mailed him a copy. He stars in the New TGR film “Far Out” premiering in Bend September, 29th. Jonny’s photo was easy as he lives and works in Bend. 6NEWS 10FEATURE| THE WATER ISSUE 12WORLD CLASS KAYAK ACADEMY 14HIKE TO HIGH LAKE 15THE DRINK WATER RAT RACE 16THE RISE OF SURF CULTURE IN BEND 22POSTER| KAROLINA WINKOWSKA 24THE RISE OF SURF CULTURE IN BEND CONT’D 27THE WOMEN OF THE WATER 28RIVER SWIMMING 29PRODUCTS| WATER BOTTLES 30PRODUCTS 33COLORFUL VEGAN 34FILM| KISSED BY GOD 35ART| TYE KRUGER | HEALTH 37WATER CONSERVATION IN BREWING 38COMMUNITY 40EVENTS EDITOR Chris Shredwards [email protected] SALES MANAGER Jenna Conrad [email protected] GRAPHIC DESIGN Brian Zager [email protected] SOCIAL MEDIA COORDINATOR Wyatt Wordhouse Contributing Writers Kelly Maer Dr. Oliver Wisco Edmond Wadeson Aaron Anderson Pat Calavan Ryan Richard Deschutes Brewery Staff Team Zelios Senior Contributing Photographers Mike Albright Pete Alport Jesse Polay Richard Hallman Contributing Photographers Austin White Kalob Gradey Scott Huggin Matthew Flitchen Beth Beard Jon Tapper For advertising please contact our Sales Manager, Jenna Conrad at [email protected] 5
