Back in the 60’s, Bachelor Butte became Mt. Bachelor. During those magical and formative years, Larry became a living legend around Bend, on and off the ski hill. A gifted and natural athlete, he excelled in alpine racing. Prior to the days of grooming machines, the moguls were BIG, and nobody bashed them harder and faster than Larry, but his affinity for BIG air was what evolved into a litany of “can-that-be-topped” by Larry stories. We had to build our own jumps in the early days, and unless they were built well out of bounds, the ski patrol would tear them down and we would have to rebuild them. Larry was often seen crossing the ski area boundary with a shovel. Larry enjoyed a large circle of friends. Rampant misbehavior was part of the scene. What’s left for us are the many memories of Larry’s true essence: his enthusiasm, his zest for life, his athletic skills and his friendly nature. For those of us fortunate enough to have been there to share many epic adventures with Larry Kite, we are left with wild and wonderful memories and the gift of a friend who will never be forgotten! By Dori Kite with contributions from Lesley Peters, Terry Foley and Marty Huber There will be a celebration of life this spring up at Mt. Bachelor.
