4 ABOUT THE COVER: PUBLISHER’S NOTE| Everything is looking great for the new year at Outdoor Central Oregon Magazine. With two issues under our belt already, we are beyond stoked on our first issue for 2018. Our readership, following, and fan base has greatly ex- panded right along with Bend’s growth. Our advertisers make this happen, so please support them to the fullest. This February, the world will turn its attention to Pyeongchang, South Korea. The Winter Olympic games will take place February 9th-25th and athletes from all over the world will compete in events ranging from curling to skiercross. Bend will be well represented with two alpine skiers; Laurenne Ross and Tommy Ford, and two snowboarders, Ben Ferguson and Kent Callister. For skiers, the difference between a great day and bad day on the slopes can come down to how your boots feel. Luckily, Bend has some great bootfitters who can help you get the fit you want. So for this issue, we “Get 2 Know” three professional fitters who know their stuff. In the last two months in Bend we have witnessed unimaginable pain. The deaths of five people have really made this community take a step back and challenged our emotions and thoughts. Life is fragile, there are always people on the edge, and it makes you think how we interact as humans. Nobody leaves their house and their first thought is, “will I die today?” We do recognize there are dangers in everyday life, but the reason we get up every day is to go out and LIVE! The pain we feel is real, but nothing can stop us in pursuing the true meaning of our lives. There is anger and it may be justified, but we can only hope that justice is served. Once people are gone we can’t celebrate their lives with anger. The pain and sadness we feel cannot compare to what the families are going through. Last year Gerry got his own signature camo print jacket from Patagonia and we were out to capture some photos of it in action on Mt. Bachelor’s backside. This was a fun session, as they always are with Gerry...telling stories, joking around, and enjoying Bachy’s waves and swells. As Gerry says “Surf is where you find it”. Aloha, friends... have a great winter. -Jon Tapper ig: @tappoix Winter has kicked back in, go out and enjoy life to the fullest! Neil Korn We have a tradition here at Outdoor Central Oregon. I track down the previous cover person and snap a photo of them holding their cover. That photo goes in the following issue. Sometimes it just doesn’t work out with busy lives and travel schedules. Here it works out, Will Dennis cover was the talk of the Bend publishing scene when this hit the streets. Many people thought it was the Eclipse at first but after further review, you could tell it was a summer fire sun.
