Gregory Fields’ route to becoming a full time Bend artist took an unusual path. Before coming here he spent twenty years living in a Hindu monastery in San Francisco, where he studied philosophy, practiced meditation, and served the community.
Greg grew up around art because his father was a painter. As a child, Greg was always drawing, painting, and sculpting at home. After leaving the monastery, he moved to Seattle where he met his wife, Marla. There he studied sculptural anatomy with the sculptor Kim Beaton and fell in love with infinite possibilities of clay. As he developed his art career he also helped support the family by working as a freelance web and graphic designer. In 2009, he received his first public art commission in Seattle.
In 2012, Greg and his wife Marla decided to move to the drier climate in Bend, attracted by the natural beauty, outdoor opportunities, and small town quality of life that Bend offers. They found a house in Northwest Crossing with a 400 square foot outbuilding that would become his new art studio.
Much of Greg’ s artwork is inspired by nature. Both he and Marla have a strong passion for hiking and camping. Getting out into the woods feeds the artistic fire and it shows in his creations. Now with a young daughter, the couple explores the Northwest in a small camper rather than with backpacks, but they still enjoy the outdoor experience just as much.
Today, Greg is a full time artist. His garden studio, surrounded by pine trees, suites him well. In addition to constant experimentation with ceramics, he is working with welded steel, mixing both mediums into unique sculptures. He also creates large pillar pieces for the garden, custom ceramic murals for interior or
exterior, artisan tile, and public art installations. He is available for custom commissions, large or small.
