ABOUT THE COVER:
PUBLISHER’S NOTE|
Every year at this time of season we get the first snow on the mountain tops, ski and snowboard films start showing up, and
summer fades quickly, leaving the “summer lovers” wondering, “what did I do this summer and where did it go so fast?” The sum-
mer of 2019 was really only July and August, June forgot to show up. This made for an even shorter summer, but as many have
pointed out there was very little wildfire smoke so outdoor fun was maximized. The cool weather people as well as the snowbirds
escaping the 120 degree Arizona days were beyond stoked.
For our September/October issue we feature the 30th Anniversary of snowboarding on Mt Hood. When John Ingersall and John
Calkins founded High Cascade Snowboard Camp they had no idea the immense history and the impact their summer camp
would have on an emerging sport and even the American culture. We also need to give credit to Timberline for opening up the
mountain to this new freestyle culture that wasn’t bashing gates. (Don’t forget that snowboarding alpine races were some of the
first snowboarders on Hood).
If you look at every snowboarding Olympic team since 1998, every single one of them had been to Mt Hood at some point or
had been a camper. Just about every professional snowboarder from all over the planet has coached at, guest appeared at, or
skated at High Cascade. Many kids from all over the world have been campers at HCSC, teams from Japan have been coming
here from almost the beginning, and now the Chinese teams are training almost year round there. HSCS created a lifestyle that
didn’t exist before. The ski bum (now the snowboard bum) could get his or her fill nearly year round. Jobs were created, careers
were started, ideas, and snowboard businesses were dreamed up, photographers and videographers honed their skills on the
glaciers as well as being able to learn from the best at HCSC’s photo camps. Still to this day at “WE ARE CAMP” the jumps are
sick, the skate parks world class and the fun off the Richter scale.
Living in a van down by the river or even in the woods has become more and more popular as of late. Some live in them season-
ally and some even year round. Some are customized in a new vehicle with all the bells and whistles, while some are basic bed
and camp stove conversions in old vans. People choose this lifestyle for many reasons, some economic as rents keep rising and
some just want a smaller footprint and the ability to have a closer connection with the natural world. However you look at the
van lifestyle, I see it as something that will only continue to get more and more popular.
If you follow such jam bands as the Chris Robinson Brotherhood (CRB), Hazy Malaze, Hard Working Americans or Circles
Around the Sun, you might know the legendary guitarist Neal Casal. How about Willie Nelson? Yeah you’ve heard of him, Neal
played on his album also. Neal played twice in Bend in the last five years, first at the Domino Room with CRB and the second
time as the headliner at 4 Peaks Music Festival with CRB a few years back. At the Domino Room, I met up with my friend of
40 years after the show. We got into a conversation and he told me when he moved to California he discovered surfing and fell
in love with it. Neal said, “it saved my life. Everytime I’m home
from touring I go right into the water and become whole again.’’
In late August, Neal, a New Jersey native, returned from Virgina
after playing the LockedN Festival with Circles Around the Sun.
In a few weeks, after returning from the festival, Neal was go-
ing to produce an album for artist Kenny Roby. Neal’s life and
career seemed to be on fire. Three days after returning from
LockedN, Neal Casal took his own life. Leaving me, his family,
friends, band mates, and fans all over the world in shock and
disbelief. There were some personal problems Neal was dealing
with that many people didn’t know about (not drugs or booze,
he was clean). I really don’t know the extent of it, Neal was so
busy we only talked from time to time (I regret that).
CONTENTS|
Whatever it was between the travel, the pressures of being a
rock guitar god and this problem I guess it just wore him down.
This time surfing couldn’t save him. Rest in Peace my brother,
your music made the world a better place. Neal Casal. A tra-
ditional “paddle out” happened on September 15th in Ventura,
California. Tribute concert was held on September 25 at the
Capitol Theater in Port Chester, New York. A west coast tribute
concert was held on September 30th at the Regent Theater in
Los Angeles, California

”The summer snowboard camps at Timberline
Ski area on Mount Hood have become the
mecca for snowboarders to be indoctrinated
into the tribe of snowboarding. Noah Salasnek,
pictured here, was recognized as an accom-
plished skateboarder and carried that style and
influence over to snowboarding and inspired
a generation of riders. In 2017, Noah lost his
battle with cancer. His legacy will live on and
his story will be shared with the next generation
of snowboarders who come to Hood’s summer
glacier in their ritual of passage.”
