4 2019 PHOTO ISSUE ABOUT THE COVER: PUBLISHER’S NOTE| OUTDOOR IS FREE OF POLITICS AND SILLY READERS POLLS BECAUSE WE ARE ABOUT FUN! Here at Outdoor Oregon Magazine we never mix politics or silly popularity polls into the publication. I personally have strong political beliefs but there is enough division in the country and I would never push my beliefs on another per- son in these pages...ever! All I want to do is bring people and communities together around FUN, common interests and a positive lifestyle. There are enough things in this world that makes people sad and angry. I want to lift people up through a common love of the outdoors. The only thing we will do is take a stand on the environment and ecology, because we need healthy and thriving earth in order to enjoy our lives better and the natural places we enjoy are fragile. Also, as human beings we need clean water and “clean” food to survive. My job is to make people happy, healthy and to entertain you with incredible photography and interesting heart warming stories that inspire. One of our main goals is to celebrate the achievement of people young and old. In the Photo Issue, we celebrate the achievements of two time National Champion Ian Brown. Ian is now USA Cycling National Champion in both cyclocross and cross country mountain biking. This September, Ian starts high school and steps up to an older division in competitive racing. Similar to Ian’s achievements, Lance Haidet became USA Cycling National Champion in both cyclocross and road racing. Last summer, we had Bend athlete Ian Boswell in the Tour de France. Unfortunately, Ian was involved in a group crash earlier in the race season caused by strong side winds. Ian suffered a concussion, keeping him out of the Tour this July. Now, Ian is back on tour racing and feeling much better. Sophia Rodriguez, a sixth grader in Bend, rolled the dice and came home with some great hardware in the Las Vegas BMX National (see news article). Three time World BMX Champion Olivia Armstrong crashed during her preliminary race and was knocked out of the finals at the 2019 UCI BMX World Championships in Heusden-Zolder, Belgium. Freshman Mira Capicchioni has qualified for the Youth Climbing World Championships this September in Italy. Mira was injured recently but is recovering quickly and is still making the trip to Eourpe. This is just a small sample of the incredible athletic achievements of our Oregon athletes. ”Amelia Brodka, Tactics team rider, front rock in Lincoln City Oregon. Amelia is a strong leader in the international skate community through her dedication to creating exposure for women’s skateboarding and bringing more females into the scene.” -Ross Druckrey Bend’s #1 Climbing Shop & Outdoor Retailer 1443 NW Juniper Street Bend, OR 97701 (541) 241-0305 We have many reasons to celebrate and be happy. -Neil Korn PUBLISHER Neil Korn [email protected] CONTENTS| 6NEWS 8FEATURE| THE PHOTO ISSUE We have a long tradition here at Outdoor that when someone scores a cover we take a photo of them holding that cover and print it in the following issue. Why? Because each one of our covers makes and creates history. We care what we put on our cover and it’s always highly debated. Each time we print a cover our goal is to have a profound effect on our readers old and new. Most of these cover holding photos are cell phone snapshots. This photo of Fred Hope holding his cover (July/Aug 2019) is next level. Cover photographer, Richard Hallman never goes halfway, it’s not in his nature. Richard is a true professional who has shot three incredible covers for this publication elevating us to all-new levels. Fred Hope is lucky to be able to shoot with Richard and we are beyond grateful and excited to have him in our corner. -Neil Korn | P: Richard Hallman 22POSTER BY JON TAPPER 40EVENTS Footwear for Hiking, Climbing, Trail Running, Water and More!
