4 JUL/AUG 2019 ABOUT THE COVER: PUBLISHER’S NOTE| Fred Hope fell in love with wind sports at a young age and hasn’t looked back for a minute. He is a true waterman and also an experienced wind athlete who can jump on any board and rip it. This is his third cover in just one year. Fred just scored the (online) June/July cover of KSurf Magazine, an international publication. Last July he was on the cover of Windsurfing Now on a foil windsurfer. This notoriety will hardly get him noticed on the campus of the University of Washington like a football or basketball star. His first year in college is done and now he has all summer to progress and impress in the wind scene around the world. We are stoked to have him as our feature interview for the 2019 “Water Issue”. While most American kids were going through the daily grind of being told what they need to learn to succeed in life, Ke- aton Green was able to forge his own path and experience the vibrant culture of a forigen country. Keaton left Sisters High School for a few months in his senior year to study in Costa Rica and enjoy the awesome surf that he had read about and watched in videos. Located between Nicaragua and Panama, Costa Rica enjoys a stable economy and is considered one of the safests countries in Central America. Keaton details his experience so well that you could close your eyes and feel like you were there with him. Since this is the annual “Water Issue” I decided to beef up the fishing section. We have heard from many of our readers that Edmond Wadeson’s articles are enjoyable and very informative so we have another of his poetic fishing chronicles. I have been around “throwing” my entire life so when I found out Oregonian and Olympic gold medalist Ryan Crouser’s life revolved around fishing I decided I needed to find out more about him and his passion for fishing. Jeremy Nelson has also been around fishing most of his life and now that he’s not dealing with a retail store seven days a week he will have more time to get back to his roots. Gary Cima has taken his love of fishing and is allowing others to come along for the ride; his fun and unique fishing art is capturing the eyes of many followers. Jen Kjellesvik and her daughter, Jasi, planned a Bend getaway in Hawaii for six months. The reason was to give Jasi a life experience in a different culture before her busy teen years started. Just before leaving to Hawaii the unthinkable happened and the trip of a lifetime took on new meaning as life’s curveballs kept coming. This article is one of the deepest most heart wrenching we have ever published. The trip became a lesson in healing: mentaly, emotionally, and spiritually. Today the girls are back in Bend, still healing but with the help of the amazing blue waters of Hawaii in a much better place. -Neil Korn ”Kiteboarding has been around for a while now, yet wind/water sports including kiteboarding continue to evolve and change. Young riders like Fred Hope creatively push what’s possible, set- ting the bar for the next generation of rippers...” -Richard Hallman 1443 NW Juniper Street Bend, OR 97701 (541) 241-0305 PUBLISHER Neil Korn [email protected] EDITOR Chris Shredwards [email protected] CONTENTS| PAINTED HILLS IS VERY OFF LIMITS FOR MTN BIKING Our May/June cover created some controversy. At first look many people assumed it was Painted Hills (John Day Fossil Beds National Monument) in Eastern Oregon. In fact it was not, and the photo was taken in a legal location not to be named or encouraged as a mountain bike “spot”. The fact remains the Painted Hills is a great place to road bike on paved roads and hike on designated trails only. Mountain Biking is very off limits there and can end in big fines for doing so. There are plenty of great mountain bike trails all over Oregon to keep you busy for a lifetime. Kate Meyer is a ripper on her mountain bike or snowboard. Luckily, she is good friends with Trevor Lyden, one of the best photogra- phers around. The pair are always shooting photos helping Kate progress women’s mountain biking. This cover of Kate has been one of our most talked about covers of all time. In fact, Kate is the first ever woman to grace an Outdoor Oregon cover. So, in many ways this issue created much needed history and a little contro- versy. -Neil Korn | P: Trevor Lyden 6NEWS 10GET2KNOW| AXEL HOVORKA 14ADVENTURE TRAVEL| COSTA RICA 16FEATURE| FRED HOPE 26POSTER| KAI HUGGIN 28SUPPAUL 29PLACES| SUMMERTIME PADDLES 30YOUTH OF THE RIVER WAVE 34RIVER WAVE SCIENCE 35LAIRD HAMILTON IN PERU 36LIFE AFTER SKJERSAA’S 37ART| LIVING RIVER STUDIO 38ART| TOPO TRAIL MAPS 40FISHING 44AN OCEAN STORY 46HEALTH 47FILM| SURF FILMS 48EVENTS SALES MANAGER Christy Miranda [email protected] GRAPHIC DESIGN Brian Zager [email protected] SOCIAL MEDIA COORDINATOR Caleb Ely Contributing Writers Dr. Oliver Wisco Edmond Wadeson Keaton Green Judy Shasek Gary Cima Trevor Crosta Jen Kjellesvik Senior Contributing Photographers Mike Albright Pete Alport Richard Hallman Trevor Lyden Contributing Photographers Conor Smith Asa Silver Keaton Green Scott Huggin Austin White SUP Paul Jen Kjellesvik Tim Pham Tilt Shift Photo/Branding Blake Miller David J.
