34 MAY/JUN 2019 I WISH WITH ALL MY HEART WE HAd MORE TIME TOGETHER A Tribute to Tom Schoderbek by Scott Kinkade 35 FILM| URBEND A FILM BY TRISTAN STEEN | ART BY SAMMY KEENA URBEND is a new grassroots ski film staring local talent in Bend, Oregon. It was filmed 100% during the blizzard of 2019 and features recognizable urban rails and jibs around Bend. The film contains dozens of day and night shots from this past February when it dumped nearly 30 inches in a few days. For skiers, Bend became a big playground, for others it paralyzed the city and closed all the schools, including colleges, for four days. Just like in 2017, many roads were unpassable, cars were abandoned in the street, busi- nesses closed, people were Nordic skiing to work, and supermarkets began to empty as delivery trucks couldn’t make it over the pass. It was hell, except for the people who like to play in the snow. After the snow stopped the sun came out and it got cold for two weeks, the perfect storm for an urban skier. A group of local skiers took full advantage of the snow, building features and jumping off or grinding down whatever they could find. URBEND was filmed and edited by Tristan Steen and features Oscar (Sauce) Weary, Sammy Keena, Mike Ashworth, Willy Monje, Mason Kennedy, Charlie Dehner, Griffin Dahl, Joe Koehler, Zac Scherman, Rowan Harvey. The short film will be released online May 15th on Vimeo and runs 15 minutes. written by Neil Korn Tom Schoderbek will live forever in my memory as an example of the kind of man I dream of being. His legacy reminds me to be kind, lead with a quiet example, and work relentlessly in pursuit of my dreams. Before I knew Tom, I thought he was some sort of legend—a star athlete whipping past me in races, a stunning scholar setting the curve on the same tests I failed and, though quiet, a genuine friend. As our brotherhood was forged over countless miles and hours we endured on our way to the next big race, I found out I was wrong. He was so much more. Tom never wasted an opportunity—every day was a chance to be great. I wish with all of my heart that we had more time together, but words cannot express how thankful I am that he came into my life. I know he changed so many others because of the impact he still has on who I am and I only hope that as we remember him we can live as he would, fearlessly seizing every moment.
