4 MAY/JUN 2019 ABOUT THE COVER: PUBLISHER’S NOTE| Jesper Hilts has always created his own path. He can’t be put into a box or stat chart, Jesper has taken his talents and used them to inspire others. It could be how he was inspired by others during the days and hours of training as a kid, ski racing with MBSEF. Now, Jesper gives back by coaching ski racing for the foundation with the intention to bring his love of skiing to eager youths. Hiking deep into the Oregon wilderness to get that one iconic photo is what drives his creative personality. We were lucky to have his long-time friend Tommy Ford interview him while home in Bend after a long race season. Lindsey Richter has been a on a tear the last few years. Her Ladies AllRide Skills clinics have been popping up all over the country. Lindsey has become a highly sought after clinician all over the world. After retiring from professional mountain bike racing she has forged a path inspiring others to become more comfortable on two wheels. This issue we “Get 2 Know” her a little better. While most families are kicking back on spring break, the Bert family continues to explore the very ends of the earth. This spring break they picked Tasmania for an adventure. While others are walking on the beach and swimming in the warm waters of Mexico or Hawaii, the Bert’s are challenging themselves each time they adventure travel. Pushing the limits of what is enjoyment and what becomes torture. Building character and testing one’s self as a family is “real living” no cushy condo on a sunny beach. Their son Jeff, a sophomore at Summit High School, is an ongoing contributor to our Adventure Travel column. He has a good ability to capture the “not for everybody adventures” his family enjoys immensely. Henry Lanman, Kate Myer and myself decided to check out a remote Oregon freeride zone on public land which Henry had found a couple months prior. The geology creates a unique environment with endless riding opportunities in a beautiful landscape. Kate found this natural hip jump, and as usual, sent it big first go. -Trevor Lyden The Bishop climbing scene is mindblowing, that’s why people from all over the world flock there. A large group for BEA climbers head down every spring break to improve their bouldering skills and to build a stronger community betweenthe fami- lies, kids, and coaches. I guess you can call it “spring training”, without the bats or balls (but possibly a hotdog here or there). Bend climber Forrest Franklin, gives us a little insight into this climbing mecca and maybe some extra credit for his English class. I overheard one top Bachelor executive say, “this is our coolest event of the year”! Thanks to Gerry Lopez and Andy Goggins, The Big Wave Challenge is a progressive snowboarding event as much as it is a throwback. It’s progressive because the young rippers keep showing up throwing innovative tricks with style on the wave features. The GLBWC is also a throwback as the older riders show that they can still ride hard and show off their timeless style. The overall purpose of the event is to build and enjoy the com- munity in the Aloha spirit. The GLBWC is not a made for TV competition. Tragedy strikes Bend again: Thomas Schoderbek seemed like he was living an exceptional life, excelling in sports and especially in college. That all ended on April 2th, 2019. Tom’s death at only 20, left his family, friends, teammates, classmates, and his community both in Colorado and in Bend devastated. It pains me to write about this and even think about it. Seeing and photographing Tom over the years, watching him grow as an athlete from a distance, I never really got to know him like others had. At Nordic and cross-country races I became a fan and was in awe of his talent and how he competed without much fanfare, winning just about every race he entered. I’m not going to try to understand this, and there is little I can do to heal the wounds or mend broken hearts. I’m just going to leave it to one his best friends Scott Kinkade to honor his life (pg. 34). -Neil Korn Sean Fitzsimons had a busy winter for a high school senior doing independent studies. As a new member of the USA Rookie Slope- style Team, Sean traveled to world cup competitions in Europe, US Grand Prix’s, The Launch, Super Park and the US Open, just to name a few. It was his breakout season to say the least, turning heads and making fans wherever he dropped into a slope course and taking home titles at Hella Big Air and ReVegetate. During Hood River’s 2019 storm of the decade (which hit two weeks be- fore Bend’s major dump), Sean flew home in between competitions just to hit a few features he’s been dreaming about for a long time. Richard Hallman was there to document every feature Sean could come up with. When this never-before-seen cover hit, it blew up fast. This photo quickly became my favorite cover of all time. While Sean was driving from California back to Hood River this March, the timing worked out that I was able to meet him at Newport Mar- ket to snap our traditional cover person in the following issue and the rest is history.
