8 MAR/APR 2019 9 NEWS| continued TONY HAWK DOES BEND Skateboard Legend was recently spotted in different locations around Bend. Hawk was in Bend as an invited speaker at the 2019 Muse that took place February 28-March 3. Word spread quickly on social media as Tony made his way around snowy Bend. Along with being an invited speaker Hawk made his way to Solsk8s to say hello to Andre, and attend an impromptu skate session at Bearings Skate Academy with Gabe and the crew. At Bearings Tony skated with the kids and signed a few autographs. Local skater and filmer Owen Adams was working at Jackson’s Corner when he got a call from his mom that she was photographing Tony Hawk downtown. Luckily for Owen, he was nearing the end of his shift and headed home. Owen hurried downtown and arrived at Muse headquarters and was able to spend fifteen minutes talking with Tony about old video parts and upcoming video projects. THE MOUNTAINS ARE CALLING TRANSWORLD SNOWBOARDING MAGAZINE CLOSES ITS DOORS On March 5th, the publishing house that owns Transworld Snowboarding and Snow- boarder Magazine sent out notice that it was ceasing production of the print editions. There had been rumors for some time now that this would be possible as Transworld and Snowboarder were aquired under the same publishing house. Notice of the decision was sent to subscribers in a letter, letting them know they could continue their subscriptions with issues of the Men’s Journal. Transworld Snowboarding Magazine started publishing in1987 and had been distribut- ing content internationally ever since. Kevin Kinnear was the founding editor and Guy Motil was their first photo editor. Transworld Snowboarding was poised to explode with the emerging sport of snowboarding which had managed to captivate so many people and shaped a generation of youth angst. From the launch of the magazine, the owners of Transworld and the editorial staff had been instrumental in petitioning to allow snow- boarding at ski resorts mainly in North America who were slow to embrace the traditional “ski area” lifestyle and traditions. PHANTOM is a permanent, one-time application, waxless base treatment that offers ultimate convenience combined with great glide performance across all temperatures, and for the life of a ski and snowboard. With 1.3 million issues in circulation per year, Transworld quickly became the worlds largest snowboarding publication. Each issue inspired generations to excel and inspire together as a community, who many felt the need to be part of this sport. The snowboard lifestyle, from new gear, where to ride, regional and international travel, trends, design, art, and, of course, music was covered in the pages of the magazine. It was a place where people from all over the world could learn about snowboarding.
