4 MAR/APR 2019 ABOUT THE COVER: PUBLISHER’S NOTE| Last issue I failed to wish everybody a happy, healthy, and safe New Year. I guess It’s never too late to wish our incredible advertisers and readers a great 2019! I can still remember the first time I saw Sean Fitzsimons snowboard. He was a tiny little machine with great style and a ton of extra pop in his game. Sean came to Bachelor from Hood River a few times to compete in USASA comps and he pretty much always won his age group in both rail and slope.Tagging along was one of Sean’s best buds another Hood ripper, Wyatt Foley. Wyatt’s dad happens to be Peter Foley, a head coach at US Snowboarding. Now Sean has been selected to the US Slopestyle Rookie Team based on his performance in Rev Tour and US Team camps. Sean is spending the winter traveling to World Cups in Europe and competitions in the states. The USA Bouldering Nationals has a new home for the next two years in Redmond. Every two years a new location is awarded the championships. Usually, the venues are large climbing gyms. In Redmond, the event took place at the Expo Center where Entre-Prises constructed two large climbing walls. This past January was sixteen years since we lost snowboard legend Craig Kelly in an avalanche. Craig had so much influence on the emerging sport in the late 80’s through his death in January 2003. To this day, his presence can still be felt, in board design, outerwear style, riding style, photography, film produc- tion, and trick innovation. At the 2019 X-Games, longtime Burton Pro Snowboarder Kelly Clark called it a career after 20 years of professional halfpipe competition. Kelly is the winningest action sports athlete with 137 podiums, 73 wins, Olympic gold and two bronzes, 10 X-Games golds, and a 2015 ESPY for best women action sports athlete. Originally from West Dover, Vermont Kelly now calls Mammoth Lakes her home. Kelly is moving on to a new phase in her snowboarding career with board design, spending more time on her snowboarding foundation and will continue to progress womens snowboarding with Burton Snowboards. Kelly has writ- ten a book, Inspire, and has a short film online now about her career two decades of riding called Rise. Canadian snowboarder Max Parrot was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The five time X- Games champion is taking off the winter season to fight the cancer. Everybody here at Outdoor and the Bend community wishes you a speedy recovery. CONTENTS| -Neil Korn 1443 NW Juniper Street Bend, OR 97701 (541) 241-0305 PUBLISHER Neil Korn [email protected] -Neil Korn In the last five and a half years of publishing, we have not had a more talked about cover. The cover for January-February was shot by Pete Alport in early December 2018. All everybody wanted to know is, “where is this?”. The best answer I can give is “Oregon Backcountry” because this is the wilderness and you need to explore for yourself. Each issue we debate and finally decide what photo will have the most impact. We only have seven covers a year so our intention is to stoke your fire for exploring and enjoying the outdoors...in a safe way of course. Sean [Fitzsimons] called me and said, “Meet me downtown at 7pm - think I have something” End of story. -Richard Hallman 6NEWS 10GET2KNOW| SKI/BOARD TUNE TECHS 14ADVENTURE TRAVEL| SPAIN 16FEATURE| THE SEAN FITZSIMONS INTERVIEW 26POSTER| ASHLEY THORNTON BY JON TAPPER 28FILM| DEMETRI BALES 30GALLERY|2019 USA BOULDERING CHAMPS 32SKI MOUNTAINEERING 36GALLERY| USASA RAIL JAM 38ART| CHRISTINA McKEOWN 40FISHING 42FEATURE| THE NEXT GEN OF PHOTOGRAPHERS 48EVENTS EDITOR Chris Shredwards [email protected] SALES MANAGER Neil Korn [email protected] GRAPHIC DESIGN Brian Zager [email protected] SOCIAL MEDIA COORDINATOR Caleb Ely Contributing Writers Dr. Oliver Wisco Edmond Wadeson Chris Shredwards Caleb Ely Cliff Agocs/Oregon Ski Guides Senior Contributing Photographers Mike Albright Pete Alport Richard Hallman Contributing Photographers Caleb Ely John McColgan Eddy Kula Robby Lloyd/lucidimages.me Oregon Ski Guides Jon Tapper For advertising please contact our Sales Manager, Neil Korn at [email protected] 5
