RESEARCH AND CLINICAL TRIALS
Soltero Cardiovascular Research Center
The Soltero Cardiovascular Research Center ( SCRC ) continued to be a hub in fiscal year 2018 for a wide array of clinical studies and trials focused on various aspects of cardiovascular disease . Cara East , MD , FACP , FAPCR , medical director of SCRC , led the center ’ s staff in evaluating new treatment approaches for heart and vascular patients .
“ We are fortunate to have a large volume of patients with a variety of heart and vascular issues who are willing to enroll in these studies . Their participation enables us to transition many of the findings from our research from the laboratory to the bedside , ultimately improving the care we are able to provide to patients and enabling us to share our knowledge with others across the country and around the world .”

ONE OF THE LEADING RESEARCH STUDIES SPONSORED THROUGH THE SCRC IN FY18 WAS :
Efficacy and Safety Study of Allogeneic Mesenchymal Precursor Cells ( rexlemestrocel-L ) in Patients with Chronic Heart Failure Due to Left Ventricular Systolic Dysfunction of Either Ischemic or Nonischemic Etiology ( DREAM HF- )
Study synopsis : This study evaluates the efficacy and safety of a single transendocardial delivery in the cardiac catheterization laboratory of human bone marrow-derived allogeneic MPCs ( rexlemestrocel-L ) for improvement in clinical outcomes ( HF-MACE ), preventing further adverse cardiac remodeling ( LVESV and LVEDV ), and increasing exercise capacity ( 6MWT ) in patients with chronic heart failure due to left ventricle systolic dysfunction of either ischemic or nonischemic etiology who have received optimal medical / revascularization therapy .
“ Medicines are the backbone of treatment for a failing heart , but there are times that medicines stop working ,” says Dr . East . “ If the heart becomes severely ill , the treatment options are heart transplant or mechanical heart implant . Stem cells provide an option when the medicines are not working and the advanced therapies are not an option . We have been implanting stem cells as part of research studies for eight years and think this can be the future of heart failure care .”
THE FUTURE FOR PRECISION MEDICINE : ALL OF US RESEARCH PROGRAM
In collaboration with Soltero Cardiovascular Research Center , Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas became one of the first enrolling sites for the nationwide All of Us Research Program , sponsored by the National Institutes of Health .
The objective of this program is to help researchers understand more about why people get sick or stay healthy . People who join the study provide information about their health , habits and environment . By looking for patterns , researchers may learn more about what affects people ’ s health . The goal is to make advances in precision medicine , which is healthcare based on each individual . Precision medicine can help inform people about the best ways to stay healthy and help find the right kind of treatments in a very individual way . For more information , please call 1.844.4US .
