Current Cardiac Rehabilitation Research : Impact of Animal-Assisted Therapy on Anxiety After MI , PCI or Valve Surgery in Cardiac Rehabilitation
The Cardiac Rehabilitation program at Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas received Institutional Review Board ( IRB ) approval in fiscal year 2018 to launch a study to evaluate the effectiveness of animalassisted ( canine ) therapy on state anxiety in cardiac rehab patients recovering from myocardial infarction ( MI ) – with or without stent , percutaneous coronary intervention ( PCI ), and valve surgery .
The study will enroll 45 patients in a control group and 45 patients in an intervention group . The Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory Short Form © ( SSTAISF ) will be given to the intervention group participants before and after their hour-long rehab session , including exercise and ten minutes of animal-assisted therapy , to measure their anxiety . Therapy dogs will be provided by Baylor University Medical Center ’ s Animal-Assisted Therapy program . The SSTAISF will also be administered to control group participants before and after their exercise therapy . Responses of the two groups will be compared to determine the effectiveness of animal-assisted therapy in reducing anxiety in the interventional group .
“ We hope that at the end of this study , results will provide healthcare professionals with a potential alternative intervention to pharmacological treatment for state anxiety in these patients ,” says Katelyn Brown , BS , EP , CCRP , exercise physiologist .
