Bypass Surgery
The most common type of cardiovascular surgery in the United States is coronary artery bypass grafting ( CABG ). In fiscal year 2018 , cardiac surgeons on the medical staff at Baylor University Medical Center performed 244 CABGs resulting with quality ratings that exceeded the mean in mortality , morbidity and overall rating . Open heart surgery remains the most common approach ; however , other options may be available for certain patients .
Baylor University Medical Center was rated HIGH PERFORMING in Aortic Valve Surgery and Heart Bypass Surgery by U . S . News & World Report for 2018-19 .

• Class I indications for CABG from the American College of Cardiology ( ACC ) and the American Heart Association ( AHA )
• Over 50 percent left main coronary artery stenosis
• Over 70 percent stenosis of the proximal left anterior descending ( LAD ) and proximal circumflex arteries
• Three-vessel disease in asymptomatic patients or those with mild or stable angina
• Three-vessel disease with proximal LAD stenosis in patients with poor left ventricular ( LV ) function
• One- or two-vessel disease and a large area of viable myocardium in high-risk area in patients with stable angina
• Over 70 percent proximal LAD stenosis with either an ejection fraction ( EF ) below 50 percent or demonstrable ischemia on noninvasive testing
