CMS publicly launched the hospital Quality Star Rating System in mid-2016 . The aim of this transparency in quality was to improve the usability of existing quality measurements on the website ,
HospitalCompare . gov , and improve the ability of consumers to make informed and important healthcare decisions . While the ratings were developed to encompass a broad array of quality measures to provide consumers with a simple overall rating generated by combining multiple dimensions of quality into a single summary score , the data is often a year or 18 months old . Hospitals that earn a 5-Star Rating generally have better scores in the heavily weighted categories , i . e . mortality , patient experience , safety and readmission .
