Extr a Corporeal Life Support IMPELLA The expansion of the transplant program and the addition of sophisticated circulatory support devices have positioned Baylor University Medical Center as a provider of more advanced care for heart failure. With the volumes of patients seen and treated, it is critical to offer patients access to innovative heart-assist devices. In fact, the hospital’s acute mechanical circulatory support program for the treatment of heart failure, one of the nation’s busiest, offers patients a full array of FDA-approved ventricular assist devices. For some patients who are too unstable for a major intervention, Baylor University Medical Center offers extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Unlike devices that support only the left ventricle, ECMO can support both ventricles. Baylor University Medical Center is the only hospital in the DFW metroplex offering comprehensive adult ECMO transport in collaboration with CareFlite. Together, they provide advanced care for critically ill patients. “We have taken the next step in healthcare by investing in innovative technology and the safety of our patients,” says John Manos, CCP, LP, Director of Perfusion Services. “At Baylor Dallas, we have facilitated the continuity of care with an experienced and knowledgeable team, including the addition of designated ECMO specialists to the medical staff.” ECMO TRANSPORTS ECMO VOLUMES FY16 FY15 0 46 FY16 106 FY15 116 20 40 60 80 100 28 120 0 24 5 10 15 20 25 30 Through participation in research specifically focused on heart failure, Baylor University Medical Center was able to determine the effectiveness and safety of the Impella 5.0 device as a short-term bridge to transplantation or bridge to left ventricular assist device. Impella 5.0 serves as both a diagnostic and therapeutic option, giving the patient and his or her medical team more time to determine the best cardiac replacement therapy. Baylor Dallas has the highest volume of Impella 5.0 devices in the nation, which speaks to the skilled, multidisciplinary team who have dedicated their efforts to providing quality patient care.
