Maman; a creature flighted from dreams, or a larger-than-life embodiment casts a powerful physical and psychological shadow. A monumental steel spider supported on 8 slender, knobby legs, and on a massive scale that allows visitors to walk underneath it. The regular wire mesh that allows the viewer to see into Mamans’ abdominal egg sac is supported by narrow irregular ribs that echo the ribbed spiral of her upper body. The sculpture and it’s objects carries resonances from the artist’s history – as a child she assisted her mother in the restoration of antique tapestries (the family business), the perfume – first launched in 1925 – is her favourite, and a stopped pocket watch hanging from the Cell wall once belonged to her grandfather. The maternity theme is also present when we look under the abdomen: a kind of fenced pocket holds 26 marble eggs.
