When Christmas Eve rolls around, by tradition, the whole community gathers at the Baptist church and we hold a candlelight service.
We sing those old Christmas hymns:“ It Came Upon a Midnight Clear,”“ The First Noel,” and“ Silent Night.”
And we pass the holy flame from the cluster of Advent candles at the front of the church from person to person— a hundred little lights twinkling in the darkness.
And I read from the opening chapter of the Gospel of John, about how a new light was coming into the world and that light was the light of love and caring and human kindness. And in that light was the life of men.
“ And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” •
