Join the Painted Rocks Movement

By Alana from Mud Mates.

If you’ve been living under a rock, watch out – you’re about to get painted! Painted rocks are appearing all around New Zealand thanks to the popularity of this simple activity. The idea behind the painted rocks craze is that you paint and hide rocks as a random act of kindness to bring an unexpected smile to someone’s day and then to pass it on.

Not a hugely messy activity, but one which is fun (and cheap) nevertheless, rock painting is loved by kids of all ages (and adults too)! But the fun is only starting as once you paint them, the game of hide and seek begins!

Searching for painted rocks provides a great opportunity to get the kids outside (and away from devices) and to explore your local parks and beaches. With all ages enjoying participating in this exciting treasure hunt, many are using a hashtag to identify where the rock originated from.

What do you need to do to create your own painted rocks?

That’s easy – you simply need three things: a rock, water resistant paint (Resene test points are fantastic!) and

a paint brush! Here’s how to get busy.

• First up, select your rocks. Aim for

flat surfaced rocks sized between the size of an egg and the size of a tennis ball.

• Next, start painting! You can paint

the rock a single colour, or paint patterns or pictures… perhaps an elaborate picture of your dog or a local scene if you’re feeling artistic! Whatever you choose, we’re certain you’ll have fun doing it.

• Then, using a vivid, write on the

back #your-town rocks e.g. #hb rocks

• At this stage, you can paint your

rock with a clear sealer to seal and protect the rocks from the weather, but this is completely optional.

• Finally, take a trip to your local park

and start hiding your rocks.
