The Remarkable Honey Bee

Out in the garden I hear honey bees

Buzzing round flowers and landing on trees

Working all day and for very long hours

Why does the honey bee love all the flowers?

They like to forage for pollen and nectar

So, you could say, they’re a tiny collector

Crawling inside as the flower heads sway

Sometimes they’ll visit 100 a day!

Nectar is sweet, and for our wee soldier

It’s what they eat when the weather gets colder

During the winter it helps them survive

That’s why the nectar is stored in the hive.

Worker bees wait for the nectar at home

Spreading it over the hive’s honeycomb

Once it is dry, then it isn’t too runny

We can enjoy it as well – yes, it’s honey!

Flowers – (like restaurants waiting for diners)

Open their doors to these little bee miners

Then as from flower to flower they fly

Some of the pollen will fall from the sky.

Sprinkled all over the plants down below

Pollen helps other new plants start to grow

Almonds and berries and plants like the clover

Benefit when the bee has come over.

Flying around like a top-dressing pilot

Collector or miner, however you style it

One thing is sure and I think you’ll agree

This is a very remarkable bee!
