WHEN YOUR CHILD IS SCARED OF…

WHEN YOUR CHILD IS SCARED OF…

Bugs, monsters, zombies, the dark, having sleepovers or… fill in the blank

This can be such a debilitating thing for your little one and it can prevent them from having fun - doing the things they want to do

So what to do?

Well, it all depends on the age too of course. Can you explain things? Or are they too small to ‘reason’ with the fear?

Obviously there is no ONE solution for kids - we love how they are all unique so there could never be just one solution. Sometimes it is a combination of things that helps them and sometimes you just need to get some help for them.

Below we have some ideas and tips for you to try and do when your child is struggling with fear of any kind.

Take the fear seriously

It is super important for children to be heard - know that you take them seriously. Especially when they talk about their fears. THIS is the time to show them that they can always come to you for help.

Try to acknowledge that you understand, maybe even let them know that you had a similar fear when you were little.

This does not mean you tell them monsters ARE real - but you can definitely let them know you totally understand they are scared.

Make a plan to tackle step by step

Expecting kids to just get over a fear in one step is too much to ask so set up a plan - step by step and IF they want to skip a step, then that is fine too of course!

It means they will feel in control AND comfortable with the plan you created.

Find a book

These days with the awesome internet to our disposal, finding a book or a story that helps with a particular fear is SO easy to find.

That super cool children’s book for the right age which covers a character’s story with the same fear can sometime be just the thing your little one needs.

Google is your friend!
